Argentina forward Lionel Messi won his 8th Man of the Match award at the FIFA World Cup 2022.

He scored his third goal at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup during the Round of 16 match against Australia.

In doing so, Messi led Argentina to victory in their Round of 16 game against Australia on Saturday.

This is the most number of MOTM awards in the FIFA World Cup won by any player since this prize was introduced in 2002.

Messi went one ahead of his biggest rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 7 of these awards to his name.

Ronaldo won his last Man of the Match award at the FIFA World Cup in the first game vs Ghana.

Former Dutch footballer Arjen Robben is third on the list with six Man of the Match awards to his name.

Argentina will now face the Netherlands in the second quarterfinal of the tournament.
